For those traveling from North America to Japan, this would require a departure no later than May 10th (since the international dateline is crossed in flight) for arrival at Kansai International Airport (KIX) or possibly Itami Airport (ITM)\u00a0if routing through Tokyo.\u00a0Carrie\u00a0will provide information on ground transportation from\u00a0either of these Osaka-based airports to Kyoto\u00a0when participants are\u00a0making travel plans.\u00a0Since tour participants book their own flights, they have the option of scheduling to arrive in Japan earlier and\/or to stay beyond the conclusion of the tour.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carriejmeyer.com\/kyototour\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Kyoto-Tour-TeaW-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-348\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carriejmeyer.com\/kyototour\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Kyoto-Tour-TeaW-2.jpg\" alt=\"kyoto-tour-teaw\" width=\"360\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.carriejmeyer.com\/kyototour\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Kyoto-Tour-TeaW-2.jpg 360w, http:\/\/www.carriejmeyer.com\/kyototour\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Kyoto-Tour-TeaW-2-263x300.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a>The itinerary of activities commences on the morning of\u00a0May 12th and concludes on the morning of May 21st, with departures on\u00a0the same day\u00a0or elective onward travel in Japan or to other places. (Those who opt to fly directly back to North America on May\u00a021st should arrive\u00a0there on\u00a0the same date). All of our scheduled excursions will take place in Kyoto and surrounding villages in the Greater Kyoto region. However, partipants will have three &#8220;free&#8221; days beyond the optional participation in morning yoga practice, breakfast, and a\u00a0scheduled group dinner to pursue individual or shared\u00a0interests, which may include a day trip to such popular\u00a0tourist destinations as nearby Nara.\u00a0We will be visiting a stunning\u00a0array of world-class and aesthetically superior temples, gardens, and shrines in different districts of Kyoto. Weather permitting, yoga practice will be held in the park surrounding the Imperial Palace on several days. There will be an opportunity to learn\u00a0a traditional Japanese art such as calligraphy, flower arranging, or tea ceremony. There will be so much to experience, on and off the itinerary&#8230; strolling through\u00a0the historic Gion district (to observe the night scene and\u00a0possibly spot some\u00a0Geisha or Maiko)\u00a0or\u00a0along the promenade\u00a0on the\u00a0Kamogawa River; finding delicious and curious foods in myriad restaurants, markets, and stalls\u00a0from the most traditional to the most modern (even Starbucks is in Kyoto now, and Carrie can show you the one with the best view of the Kamogawa River and eastern mountains of Kyoto); shopping for anything from Kyoto ceramics, paper products, or art pieces,\u00a0to Japanese electronics or household items; visiting museums, galleries, and parks;\u00a0catching seasonal festivals or performances;\u00a0and discovering more than you imagined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would make you a great candidate for this memorable excursion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An appreciation for and interest in the culture of traditional and contemporary Japan<\/li>\n<li>The ability and willingness to walk (up to a few miles on some days) mostly on flat grades but with slopes and stairs to negotiate on\u00a0some days<\/li>\n<li>The initiative and independence to pursue your own interests on free days, alone or with others, or just relax; plenty of support and information will be available to get you to your places\/activities of personal interest<\/li>\n<li>The willingness to respectfully share time-space with up to seven other lovely people in your group<\/li>\n<li>The flexibility to adapt to unexpected changes in the schedule due to weather and other\u00a0variables<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0An open-minded and congenial\u00a0attitude (a sense of adventure and humor are also a plus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What would not make you a good\u00a0fit for this tour:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having a physical injury or condition\u00a0that prevents you from walking with ease on a variety of surfaces that include gravel paths and stairs. Unfortunately, our itinerary (and many places we will visit)\u00a0will not be able to accommodate anyone using a\u00a0wheelchair or walker or anyone\u00a0who does not have a basic level of fitness to walk some distances at a typically easy pace\u00a0and negotiate occasional slopes and stairs.<\/li>\n<li>Having significant dietary restrictions.\u00a0Our itinerary includes dining in predominantly Japanese restaurants serving traditional Japanese cuisine.\u00a0Although it\u00a0will be\u00a0possible to accommodate a vegetarian diet (with the exception of fish broth that is a standard ingredient in soups and hot noodle dishes), it will not be possible to accommodate those with\u00a0most other strict dietary concerns such as celiac disease. Everyone will have choices as to what to order at shared meal times and complete free choice of what to eat for unscheduled meals.
